The
Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s most enduring plays, and
its setting
- a magical and mysterious island - inspired Director Vanessa Stacey to
transport
the
production this year from its usual home in Victoria Esplanade to
Palmerston North's own central city island, The Square.
This production marks the beginning of Summer Shakespeare's second decade, the first having seen the annual event grow to an eagerly awaited institution and a vital part of the city's cultural calendar, and it also sees a new, and entirely different imagining of the play that began the cycle in 2003. In this version a lush 'steampunk' aesthetic in costume and set is married to new, original music that both enhances the piece's atmosphere and turns some of Shakespeare's timeless dialogue into song. Whether you are a Summer Shakespeare veteran or a complete newcomer, this production promises to involve and enchant you. |
